After lyophilization, the product is usually a porous cake or powder with a large internal surface area. This structure can absorb moisture quickly if exposed to humid air, so vials are sealed under vacuum or an inert gas. Moisture uptake may lower the glass transition temperature of the dried matrix and accelerate chemical or physical degradation. Storage conditions therefore depend on the formulation, container, and intended shelf life. Some products remain stable at room temperature, while others require refrigeration or freezing.
Quality control for lyophilized products includes appearance, cake structure, reconstitution time, pH, residual moisture, and potency. Residual moisture is a key attribute because excess water can reduce stability, while excessively low moisture may cause structural changes or aggregation in some systems. Stability studies compare real-time and accelerated conditions to estimate shelf life. Analytical methods must be validated for the specific matrix, container, and moisture range. Sterility and container integrity are also monitored for sterile products.
A typical cycle begins with freezing, sometimes including an annealing step to control ice crystal size. Freezing conditions influence the pore network that later allows vapor escape. During primary drying, shelf temperature and chamber pressure are set so heat enters the product while its temperature stays below the collapse or eutectic point. Secondary drying then raises the shelf temperature to desorb bound water and lower residual moisture. Cycle design depends on formulation, fill volume, container type, and equipment capability.
The physics of lyophilization couples heat transfer, mass transfer, and phase behavior. Sublimation requires a vapor pressure difference between the ice front and the chamber, and the dried layer adds resistance to vapor flow. Amorphous formulations are characterized by a glass transition temperature of the maximally freeze-concentrated solute, often denoted Tg'. Crystalline bulking agents can provide structure, while amorphous excipients stabilize labile components. Open questions remain about spatial heterogeneity, edge effects, and how laboratory cycles scale to production.

After lyophilization, a product's quality depends on residual moisture, cake appearance, and reconstitution time. Residual moisture is often measured by Karl Fischer titration or thermogravimetric analysis. A low moisture content can slow chemical degradation, but overly dry cakes may be brittle or slow to dissolve. Stability studies track these attributes over months under defined temperature and humidity conditions. Batch records link these measurements to specific process runs and help identify trends before a product fails specification.
Storage conditions for dried products usually aim to exclude moisture and oxygen. Vials are sealed under vacuum or with an inert gas, and stoppers must maintain a barrier during transport. Temperature recommendations vary; some materials remain stable at room temperature, while others need refrigeration or frozen storage. Humidity control is critical because dried cakes can absorb water rapidly once a container is opened. Desiccant packs and moisture-barrier bags add further protection during shipping.
Quality control also examines cake structure, color, and reconstitution behavior. A collapsed or shrunken cake can indicate a thermal excursion during drying. Analytical methods such as X-ray diffraction, differential scanning calorimetry, and near-infrared spectroscopy can detect crystallinity or moisture distribution. Regulatory expectations focus on validated assays and lot-to-lot consistency. Questions remain about how well accelerated stability tests predict long-term behavior for every formulation. Visual inspection remains common but is subjective without trained reviewers and reference images.
Lyophilization is a dehydration process that removes water from a frozen material by sublimation under low pressure. The material is first frozen to convert liquid water into ice. Next, the pressure is reduced below the triple point of water so that ice changes directly into vapor without passing through a liquid phase. This step is called primary drying. The result is a porous solid or cake that retains the original shape of the frozen solution.
After primary drying, secondary drying removes water that remains bound to the material. This stage raises the shelf temperature while maintaining low pressure, which encourages desorption of unfrozen water. Residual moisture can be reduced to a low percentage, improving stability for many products. The process parameters, including freezing rate, shelf temperature, and chamber pressure, influence the final pore structure and reconstitution behavior. Control of these variables helps prevent collapse or meltback during drying.
A formulation often contains excipients that protect the active ingredient during freezing and drying. Bulking agents provide structure, while lyoprotectants stabilize sensitive molecules. The freezing step can produce ice crystals whose size and distribution affect the drying rate, and cycle design includes freezing, annealing, and drying phases. If the product temperature rises above a critical value, the cake may collapse or lose its porous structure. Successful lyophilization therefore depends on the interaction between formulation, equipment, and cycle design.
A goal of less than six months has been suggested, but due to factors such as dosage and type of benzodiazepine, reasons for prescription, lifestyle, personality, environmental stresses, and amount of available support, a year or more may be needed to withdraw. Withdrawal is best managed by transferring the physically dependent patient to an equivalent dose of diazepam because it has the longest half-life of all of the benzodiazepines, is metabolised into long-acting active metabolites, and is available in low-potency tablets, which can be quartered for smaller doses. A further benefit is that it is available in liquid form, which allows for smaller reductions. Chlordiazepoxide, which also has a long half-life and long-acting active metabolites, can be used as an alternative. Nonbenzodiazepines are contraindicated during benzodiazepine withdrawal as they are cross tolerant with benzodiazepines and can induce dependence. Alcohol is also cross tolerant with benzodiazepines and more toxic and thus caution is needed to avoid replacing one dependence with another. During withdrawal, fluoroquinolone-based antibiotics are best avoided if possible; they displace benzodiazepines from their binding site and reduce GABA function and, thus, may aggravate withdrawal symptoms. Antipsychotics are not recommended for benzodiazepine withdrawal (or other CNS depressant withdrawal states) especially clozapine, olanzapine or low potency phenothiazines, e.g., chlorpromazine as they lower the seizure threshold and can worsen withdrawal effects; if used extreme caution is required.
Tedizolid, sold under the brand name Sivextro (by Merck) is an oxazolidinone-class antibiotic. Tedizolid phosphate is a phosphate ester prodrug of the active compound tedizolid. It was developed by Cubist Pharmaceuticals, following acquisition of Trius Therapeutics (originator: Dong-A Pharmaceuticals), and is marketed for the treatment of acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (also known as complicated skin and skin-structure infections (cSSSIs)). The most common side effects include nausea (feeling sick), headache, diarrhea and vomiting. These side effects were generally of mild or moderate severity. Tedizolid was approved for medical use in the United States in June 2014, and authorized for medical use in the European Union in March 2015. Tedizolid phosphate is a therapeutic alternative on the World Health Organization's List of Essential Medicines.

== Later life and recognition == Smolková-Keulemansová became one of the leading experts in the field of chromatography. She was the first professor of chemistry in the Czech Republic and one of the first in Europe. Not only did she continue her studies in chemistry, but she also focused on polarography, a PhD focused on gas chromatography and a DrSc concentrated on inclusion compounds in chromatography. In the early 1970s, inclusion complex formations in selective analytical separations became a major focus of Smolková-Keulemansová's, her first choice being cyclodextrins, but moving on with urea and thiourea for the separation of isomers. Her research on cyclodextrins started soon after her methods focused on gas chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography and electromigration. Her research became more widespread and she was asked to add many monographs on cyclodextrins, one of them being for a compendium on supramolecular chemistry edited by Jean-Marie Lehn. She has written and co-written 140 original papers and numerous reviews and has contributed to many books, including her work in Journal of High-Resolution Chromatography, "A Few Milestones on the Journey of Chromatography", and an article in the journal Chromatographia, "Study of retention of isomeric aromatic hydrocarbons on GTCB and cyclodextrins". Smolková-Keulemansová died on 27 February 2024, at the age of 96.

A technique for retaining the blind when administering supplies in a clinical trial, when the two treatments cannot be made identical. Supplies are prepared for Treatment A (active and indistinguishable placebo) and for Treatment B (active and indistinguishable placebo). Subjects then take two sets of treatment; either A (active) and B (placebo), or A (placebo) and B (active). (ICH E9) Dropout
=== Iraq === In a March 2000 article in The Guardian, Galloway described himself as a supporter of the Iraqi people and the Ba'ath Party, but not Saddam Hussein himself. In a House of Commons debate on 6 March 2002, Foreign Office minister Ben Bradshaw said Galloway was "not just an apologist, but a mouthpiece, for the Iraqi regime over many years." Galloway called the minister a liar and refused to withdraw on the grounds that Bradshaw's claim was "a clear imputation of dishonour", and the sitting was suspended due to the dispute. Bradshaw later withdrew his allegation, and Galloway apologised for using unparliamentary language. Giving evidence in his libel case against The Daily Telegraph in 2004, Galloway testified that he regarded Saddam as a "bestial dictator" and would have welcomed his removal from power, but not by means of a military attack on Iraq. Galloway also pointed out that he was a prominent critic of Saddam Hussein's government in the 1980s, as well as of the role of Margaret Thatcher's government in supporting arms sales to Iraq during the Iran–Iraq War.
=== Religion === Bukele's religious beliefs were controversial during his 2019 presidential campaign, with rumors that he was a Christian, a Muslim, or an atheist. The controversy began when pictures from 2011 of Bukele praying at a mosque with his father and brothers spread on social media. Bukele dismissed the controversy as an attempt by the political right to exploit Islamophobia in the predominantly Catholic country. Although Bukele does not identify with any religion, he has stated that he believes in God and Jesus. In a 2015 interview, Bukele said: "I am not a person who believes much in the liturgy of religions. However, I believe in God, in Jesus Christ. I believe in his word, I believe in his word revealed in the Holy Bible. And I know that God does not reject anyone because of their origins". Before that year, some Salvadorans believed that he was a Muslim. Bukele has referred to Bible verses, God, and Saint Óscar Romero — the archbishop of San Salvador who was assassinated in 1980 — in some of his speeches, and has called himself an "instrument of God" ("instrumento de Dios"). He met with Pope Francis in April 2015, saying that the pope told him that Rutilio Grande — a Jesuit priest who was assassinated in 1977 — would soon be beatified.

It was also in the Basque Country where a higher percentage of negative votes was registered (23.5%). A different situation to that of Catalonia, where the level of participation was similar to that of the rest of Spain, and the positive votes exceeded 90%.
== Epidemiology == Each year, more than 2.5 million people in the United States develop pressure ulcers. In acute care settings in the United States, the incidence of bedsores is 0.4% to 38%; within long-term care it is 2.2% to 23.9%, and in home care, it is 0% to 17%. Similarly, there is wide variation in prevalence: 10% to 18% in acute care, 2.3% to 28% in long-term care, and 0% to 29% in home care. There is a much higher rate of bedsores in intensive care units because of immunocompromised individuals, with 8% to 40% of those in the ICU developing bedsores. However, pressure ulcer prevalence is highly dependent on the methodology used to collect the data. Using the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (EPUAP) methodology there are similar figures for pressure ulcers in acutely sick people in the hospital. There are differences across countries, but using this methodology, pressure ulcer prevalence in Europe was consistently high, from 8.3% (Italy) to 22.9% (Sweden). A recent study in Jordan also showed a figure in this range. Some research shows differences in pressure-ulcer detection among white and black residents in nursing homes.
=== Border reopening: August–September 2023 === On 22 August 2023, a flight from Pyongyang to Beijing arrived, marking the first known international commercial flight to depart from North Korea since the country's borders were closed in January 2020. Additionally, four flights between Pyongyang and Vladivostok, Russia, were scheduled for that month. On 27 August 2023, the Korean Central News Agency reported that North Korea would allow its citizens living abroad to return to the country for the first time since travel restrictions were imposed in early 2020. However, these returning citizens were still required to undergo a one-week quarantine. On 25 September 2023, North Korea lifted its travel ban on foreign nationals, as reported by China's CCTV. Foreigners would still be subject to a two-day quarantine upon their arrival.

Collapse occurs when the product temperature rises above its collapse or eutectic temperature during drying. The frozen matrix loses structure, producing a shrunken or melted appearance. This can slow reconstitution and may affect stability.
Karl Fischer titration is a common method, along with loss on drying and thermogravimetric analysis. Each method has different sensitivity and sample requirements. Results should be interpreted with the product's formulation and container in mind.
No. Lyophilization removes water but is not a sterilization step. Sterile products are typically filtered and filled aseptically before freezing, and container closure integrity is maintained afterward.
Freezing only converts liquid to solid. Lyophilization adds vacuum and controlled warming so frozen solvent sublimes, leaving a dry porous solid. The two steps are related but not interchangeable.
